Balloon vine is called as Balloon plant or Heart-pea or Heart-seed.


It is type of climbing plant, grows rapidly into the tops of trees and mostly grows in south Asia, Central America, South America and throughout the world as annual plant.

It is grown in many countries as an ornamental garden creeper.

It is often found as a weed along roads, bushes and rivers. Flowers are balloon like thin walled capsule, which contains several large black seeds. The seeds are black with a heart-shaped white spot. These capsules can be carried by wind and float freely on water.

Medicinal uses:

It is mainly used for curing join pain and nervous disorder. It is also having anti-diarrhea property and examined in homeopathic medicine.

In olden days in Tamil Nadu state (India) it is used as an food item.

Take a handful of Balloon vine leaves, clean it properly with water, grind with little quantity of water to make as paste and add it with dosa mix or else you can mix these cleaned raw leaves with dosa mix and then grind it to make dosa.

Nayuruvi (Tamil) / Achyranthes Aspera (Botanical name) / Prickly Chaff flower (Common name)

 Achyranthes aspera is a commonly called as Prickly Chaff flower and in Tamil language it is called as Nayuruvi.

It is type of weed distributed throughout the world. It is mostly seen in waste land. It will grow upto 3 feet. Flowers are bisexual having both male and female.

Leaves are bitter in taste, a laxative and useful for the treating vomiting, heart disease, piles, abdominal pains, dysentery and blood diseases.

It is one of the 21 leaves used in the Ganesh Pooja.

The whole plant contains the alkaloids achyranthine and betaine. Achyranthine, a water-soluble alkaloid, is reported to dilate blood vessels, lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate and increase the rate and amplitude of respiration.

This plant is said to be used as safeguard against scorpions and snakes by paralyzing them. It is described as purgative, pungent, and digestive.

Roots are useful in treatment of cancer. Decoction of roots is used in stomach troubles.

The roots are considered to be more effective is used in the treatment of diarrhea and dysentery.

The ash from the burnt plant, mixed with mustard oil and a pinch of salt, is used as a tooth powder for cleaning teeth.

This plant is cultivated as a food crop in China.

It is said to be the plant shows significant abortifacient activity in mice and rabbits.

Abutilon indicum is a type of weed commonly called as Indian Mallow. 

It is mostly found in tropical region. In south India it is commonly seen in bushes. This plant can reach upto 1 to 2m with leaves arranged alternately. 

Flowers looks yellowish with 5 to 7 cm long stalks. Fruits are green in colour and brown when it dried, it looks like cylindrical shape. We'll get some itching feeling when our body get contact with the plant.

Medicine Use:

Various parts of Abutilon indicum are used in traditional medicine. 
 
Parts are uses as a sedative, laxative, diuretic, anti-inflammatory and astringent. Also it is used for treat leprosy, ulcers, headaches, gonorrhea, and bladder infection.

It is used in relieve symptoms of diarrhea and get rid of thread worms in our body.

Roots, leaves, flowers, seeds and stem are used in traditional tamil medicine. All parts are dried and consumed daily to relieve symptoms of cold and fever.

Leaves are used as tonic.

Dried seeds are used as purgative.

Decoction made from the leaves is useful for cure tuberculosis, ulcer and bleeding disorders.

Whole plant with root is dried and made as powder and taken daily for 6 months by ladies till marriage and said to be help for safe pregnancy.

Acalypha Indica (Botanical Name) / Kuppaimeni (In Tamil)

Acalypha indica is called Indian Aclypha with green unisexual flowers grown in tropical land to an height of 75 cm. It’s found mostly in India, Africa and Sri Lanka.

Due to some special character it is said to be attracted by cat and so it's called as Poonamayakki in Tamil.
It is used in Tamil Siddha medicine and it is believed to make our body ourselves feel fresh and better.
In West Africa the leaves are cooked and eaten as a vegetable.

Medicinal Value:

The paste acquired from the leaves of the Acalypha indica is helpful in curing burns.

The juice extracted from the leaves, mixed with lime are applied on skin to cure diseases caused by Ringworm.

Powdered leaves are used to cure infected wounds.

The whole plant of this herb collected in its flowering stages and dried to make ingredient for the drugs Acalypha. It is useful in broncitis ,asthma, pneumonia and rheumatism.

Fresh juice of leaves mixed with oil and salt is used to cure Scabies.

The active medicinal compounds like Acalyphine, alkaloids, cyanogenic glucoside and Triacetoneamine are extracted from this plant.

Solanum Nigrum (Botanical Name) / Manathakkali or Milagu Thakkali (In Tamil)

Generally called as: Black Nightshade and sometimes Garden Nightshgade

Its  short-lived herb often found in cultivated land and present world wide. It's grown up to a height of 30 to 120 cm.

In early Ayurvedic texts, Solanum nigrum / Black Nightshade has been mentioned as an important ingredient in herbal heart medications.

The juice of the plant is used on ulcers and other skin diseases. The fruits are used as a tonic and for treating asthma. Raw leaves can be cleaned and chewed directly for curing mouth ulcer.

This plant's leaves are used to treat mouth ulcers in South India. Boiled extracts of leaves and berries are also used to alleviate liver-related ailments, including jaundice in North India. In Assam, the juice from its roots is used against asthma and whooping cough.

Ripe berries and cooked leaves of this plant are used as food. It is good for health. Ripped berries are sweet taste and can be eaten raw.

Pirandai (In Tamil) - Cissus Quadrangularis (Botanical Name)

Cissus Quadrangularis has been used in traditional Ayurvedic system for weight management, to heal broken bones and injured ligaments and tendons.

Cissus quadrangularis reaches a height of 1.5 m. Its mostly seen in dry waste lands.
